Yulo adds silver, bronze to his Doha World Cup gold

Carlos Yulo went into the final day of the Doha, Qatar edition of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series eyeing nothing less than snaring two more gold medals to add to his one-gold haul the day before.

Yulo did end up with two medals, but not the glaring gold he originally set out to harvest.

But Yulo would have to be content leaving Doha with three medals—a gold in floor exercise, a silver in parallel bars and a bronze in vault.

The 22-year-old Leveriza, Manila native had a 14.933 in parallel bars but was overtaken by eventual winner Illia Kovtun of Ukraine in the last minute as the latter posted a 14.966.

Yulo had 14.883 for that bronze in the vault event topped by Armenia’s Artur Davtyan, who posted a 15.083.

The Doha stint was a big improvement from Yulo’s bronze medal effort in parallel bars in the first leg in Cottbus, Germany the week before.

Yulo is scheduled to also compete in the last two legs of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Baku, Azerbaijan from March 9 to 12 and Cairo, Egypt from April 27-30.

The two-time world champion is also expected to lead the country’s campaign in this May’s Phnom Penh Southeast Asian Games and this September’s Belgium World Championships where slots in next year’s Paris Olympics are at stake.
