Gilas Pilipinas defeats Lebanon 107-96 in their Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers

Gilas Pilipinas showed its firepower in front of their home fans, defeating Lebanon, 107-96, last Friday, February 24, 2023, in their FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers clash at the Philippine Arena.

Justin Brownlee made a rousing debut for Gilas Pilipinas when he had 17 points, four rebounds and five assists as the home side improved their record to 6-3.

Jamie Malonzo led Gilas’ bench mob as he had 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Mason Amos was a big revelation for the national squad as the 18-year-old had 13 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field including three three-pointers.

“Obviously, we were satisfied with our offense. We shot the ball well. In fact, we had 31 assists on only 13 turnovers. That allowed us to hit 17 three-pointers,” said Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes.

Gilas went on a tear as early as the first quarter when Brownlee hit back-to-back threes to start his Gilas Pilipinas debut. The Nationals started with 11 straight points to start the second quarter to grab a 36-19 lead early in the period.

Malonzo lit up the crowd with two dunks to enable Gilas Pilipinas to pull ahead and grab a 69-51 advantage in the third with Amos ending the run with a three.

Reyes though they still have work to do as they prepare for Jordan in their match to be played on Monday, February 27, 2023, at the Philippine Arena.

“Very good performance on the offensive end. However, there is still a lot left to be desired on defense. We gave up almost a hundred points to a team without Arakji, Haidar, and even their naturalized players. It’s always the case. Some things to be happy about but some things to continue working on. Learning experience for us,” said Reyes.
